Charges Pending After 2 Penn Hills Children Hit By Vehicles
PENN HILLS (KDKA) -- Charges are pending after two Penn Hills children were hit by vehicles in two separate incidents.
A 6-year-old was hit by a car on Wednesday while at a bus stop on Frankstown Road. The child returned to school on Thursday.
Penn Hills Police Chief Howard Burton said the driver was trying to pass the bus.
He also said it is unclear if the bus lights were yellow or red at the time of the incident.
On Tuesday, a car hit a student in Linton Middle School's parking lot. The student was back in school on Thursday.
Police said the driver was going the wrong way in the lot.
"I don't want to comment on that, but I was very disturbed about the initial report I received," the police chief said.
District superintendent Dr. Nancy Hines cannot comment on the specifics of either incident but shared concerns about driving near school buses.
"If it's a bus, it's marked 'school students.' I certainly evaluate where I am, the condition, the movement of the kids," Hines said.
She also sent out a strong message about student safety to the district, saying:
"Penn Hills has a long tradition of standing together as a community, especially in tough times. Accordingly, we ask EVERYONE to continue conveying consistent messages with all means available to encourage those who travel throughout our community to slow down and to take extreme care."
Teachers in the district set aside time Thursday to talk to students about safety, and the district asked parents to continue the conversation at home.
Charges are pending in both incidents. They will be traffic citations by summons.
