Penguins, UPMC Pick Alternate Site For New Complex In Cranberry
CRANBERRY TOWNSHIP (KDKA/AP) - The Pittsburgh Penguins and the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center have decided on an alternate site for a $70 million sports medicine complex north of the city.
The parties had discussed building in the Village of Cranberry Woods development near Route 228, but have decided instead to build on 13 acres, also near Route 228 but much closer to Interstate 79.
The team and UPMC officials say the new site will be more accessible and make the complex more visible.
The UPMC Lemieux Sports complex slated to open by July 2015 will feature two ice rinks and will be the hockey equivalent of a sports medicine and practice facility UPMC already has with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
CONSOL Energy Center will always be the home of the Penguins for games and for practice, but other events sometimes get in the way.
"There just are times during the year because you have other events here when you don't have ice here, so you have to practice somewhere else," Pittsburgh Penguins Vice President of Communications Tom McMillan said last year when the project was announced.
UPMC will build and own the center, but the Penguins would lease it and practice there.
Youth hockey leagues would also be offered in a region that the Penguins say needs more available ice time.
