PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- The Pittsburgh Penguins have unveiled the logo for their 50th anniversary season in 2016-2017.
The logo features the traditional skating Penguin and the team's three Stanley Cups.
Tuesday marks the 50th anniversary of the Penguins franchise being awarded by the NHL (February 9, 1966). The team began play in the 1967-68 season.
The Philadelphia Flyers, Los Angeles Kings and St. Louis Blues also were part of the NHL's 1967 expansion class and will be marking their 50th anniversary seasons in 2016-17.
In a release, team president David Morehouse said: "We're looking forward to a season-long salute of a half-century of Penguins hockey," Morehouse, President and CEO of the Penguins said. "We're excited to honor our history, and we think our fans will enjoy the many activities that we have planned. We will have more announcements related to the anniversary heading into next season."
The team says a season-long celebration will start with a Fan Fest on August 27-28, featuring appearances by players, coaches, alumni and activities for fans of all ages.
