Penguins Take The Stanley Cup To U.S. Open

OAKMONT (KDKA) – The world's best golfers are looking to get their hands on the U.S. Open trophy at Oakmont Country Club. But, another famous trophy made an appearance Thursday afternoon.

Fresh off their victory parade, members of the Pittsburgh Penguins wasted no time in showing off the Stanley Cup to the golf world.

Captain Sidney Crosby carried the Stanley Cup onto the grounds around noon.

He was joined by Ian Cole, Jeff Zatkoff, Justin Schultz, Oscar Sundqvist, Beau Bennett, Bryan Rust, Carl Hagelin, Nick Bonino, Eric Fehr, Conor Sheary and Patric Hornqvist.

They made their way from one hospitality tent to another and eventually made it to the clubhouse.

A few of the golfers had a chance to see the trophy during the rain delays, and some spectators were lucky enough to get a pic with Lord Stanley.

One of the Keeper's of the Cup, Mike Bolt, came with the Pens to Oakmont. He showed KDKA's Rich Walsh where the Penguins' names will be engraved on the trophy.

"The Penguins are going to go right here," said Bolt pointing to the next open space on the Cup. "They'll be on the Stanley Cup for 53 years. Next year's winner will be filling up the cup. When the entire ring is filled up, we take the top ring off, retire it into the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto, move the entire thing up and put a new ring on the bottom. The longest you can be on the cup is 65 years, and the shortest is 52 years, depending on where you fit. Like I mentioned, 53 years for the Pittsburgh Penguins… 52 names will be going on there in late September."

Meanwhile, the Pens and some of the team's staff watched a few holes in between the rain drops. Most of the players wanted to see Jordan Spieth. They also tried their hand at putting the practice greens, but Fehr was the only one to make the putt.

On Wednesday, more than 400,000 people attended the Penguins' victory parade Downtown.  It was the largest sports parade in Pittsburgh history.
