Penguins Sign Cole To 3-Year, $6.3 Million Deal

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - The Pittsburgh Penguins and defenseman Ian Cole agreed to terms on a three-year contract Monday morning.

According to the Penguins' official website, the deal carries an annual salary cap hit of $2.1 million.

Cole was acquired from the St. Louis Blues in exchange for Robert Bortuzzo and a 2016 seventh round  pick at the Trade Deadline this past spring.

In 20 regular season games with the Penguins, Cole registered one goal and seven assists. In five playoff games, Cole added two assists.

The steady defenseman was set to become a restricted free agent on July 1.

In addition to Cole, the Penguins now have Kris Letang, Rob Scuderi, Ben Lovejoy and Olli Maatta under contract for the upcoming season.

The Penguins still have decisions to make about pending unrestricted free agent defensemen Paul Martin and Christian Ehrhoff.

They also have decisions to make about Derrick Pouliot, Scott Harrington and Brian Dumoulin getting an extended look next season.
