Penguins Lose To Sharks 3-2 In OT
PITTSBURGH (KDKA/AP) -- Despite two goals from Tyler Kennedy -- including one that tied the game with less than a minute left in the third period, the Penguins lost to the San Jose Sharks 3-2 in overtime at home last night.
Patrick Marleau scored his second goal of the game at 4:56 of overtime to extend the Sharks' winning streak to five games.
Logan Couture, with his franchise rookie-record tying 25th goal of the season, also scored while Antti Niemi stopped 24 shots.
Improving to 14-2-1 in their past 17 games, the surging Sharks vaulted a point ahead of Phoenix to take over the Pacific Division lead.
Kennedy scored twice for the Pens, including a goal that brought fans to their feet when he stuffed in Jordan Staal's rebound, with 50 seconds remaining in the third.
Marleau, however, scored the decisive goal during a scramble in front. Though Marc-Andre Fleury stopped an initial shot from Couture, Marleau managed to flip in his rebound.
The goal was payback for Marleau, who was in on a breakaway a minute earlier, only to be robbed by Fleury's brilliant glove save.
There was more bad news on the injury front for the Penguins during the game, too.
Defenseman Brooks Orpik did not return for the start of the second period after taking a shot off his hand.
Orpik skated off shaking his hand with just under two minutes left in the opening period Wednesday after blocking a Marleau shot from the right circle.
Orpik got to the bench and was immediately escorted up the tunnel to the team's locker room.
