Penguins Hire New Minor-League Head Coach
PITTSBURGH (93-7 The FAN) - The Pittsburgh Penguins have announced the hiring of Mike Sullivan as their head coach of the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.
At one point in his coaching career, the 47-year-old Sullivan was the head coach of the Boston Bruins (2003-06) and most recently served as a player development coach for the Chicago Blackhawks.
Sullivan also played in the NHL as a defensive forward after being drafted by the New York Rangers in the 4th round of the 1987 NHL entry draft.
Sullivan played 11 seasons in the NHL spending time with the San Jose Sharks, Calgary Flames, Boston Bruins and Phoenix Coyotes.
Sullivan also has experience coaching at the AHL level as he coach the Boston Bruins minor league affiliate in Providence to a record of 41-17-13 before being promoted.
His experience as a coach at the NHL levels also extends to stinks as an assistant with Tampa Bay from 2007-09, the New York Rangers from 2009-13, and one season in Vancouver with the Canucks from 2013-14.
Sullivan twice served as a coach for the United States in international competition when he was the head coach of the 2007 World Championship team and an assistant coach at the 2006 Olympic Games in Turino, Italy.
Sullivan replaces former AHL Head Coach John Hynes who left the Penguins organization after 7 seasons to join Ray Shero in New Jersey to become the Devils new head coach.
