Penguins Hand Out Thanksgiving Cheer In The Hill District
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- From skating on ice to turkeys on ice, the Penguins brought Thanksgiving early to the Bedford Hope Center in the Hill District.
Four players handed out turkeys and vegetables to grateful residents.
"They're going out of their way to do something nice for us, so we appreciate it," says Hill District resident Darrell Johnson.
Effie Williams agrees.
"It continues to be a great thing that they're doing for our community," she says, "and I thank them very much."
Every year, the Penguins and Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank team up to feed 100 families.
This is the seventh year, so we're talking 700 turkeys.
"They're a little bit heavier than I thought they'd be, but they're big," says Penguins defenseman Paul Martin, as he hands out the frozen birds. "They're nice. Happy Thanksgiving!"
Fellow defenseman Robert Bortuzzo says it's payback.
"The community does so much for us, coming out to support us, so to do something like this is actually the least we can do, and we're happy to do something like this," said Bortuzzo.
