Penguins, Fleury Agree To Terms On 4-Year, $23M Extension
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – The Pittsburgh Penguins have signed goaltender Marc-Andre Fleury to a four year extension.
According to the team's official website, the $23 million deal runs through the 2018-19 season and carries a $5.75 million cap hit per year.
The 29-year-old netminder has started nine games this season and boasts a 7-2 record to go along with a 1.89 GAA and .931 save percentage.
He has also recorded three shutouts in his last four starts, including each of his last two.
Fleury holds the franchise records for wins (295), games played (540) and shutouts (31).
Fleury has won 52 games in the playoffs in his career, which are the most among active goalies in the NHL.
Though, his crowning achievement was backstopping the Penguins to a Stanley Cup title in 2009.
USA Today Hockey Writer Kevin Allen joined the Starkey and Mueller show to share his immediate reaction to Fleury's extension.
"When you look at it, it was really the logical move," Allen said. "For the last three months I've been looking at the availability of goalies, I've looked at the free agent market, there was really nobody available next summer."
