Penguins' Fans Hoping For End To NHL Lockout
PITTSBURGH (KDKA/AP) -- The latest news from New York is that the NHL has rejected the players' latest offer for a labor deal.
According to the Associated Press, negotiations have broken off at least until the weekend.
So, will the impasse be solved in time to see hockey before the end of the year? Many Pittsburghers say they are missing hockey.
There is a void in our town.
"We really need to get the Pens back on the ice. We're ready," said Brian Hensch, a Pens fan from Morningside.
With each passing cancelation, the angst grows.
"I'm a very big hockey fan," said Butch Malachow, a fan from Bridgeville. "I've been a hockey fan since the Lemieux era and I'm really disappointed that they're not playing."
There have been marathon talks in New York City over the past two days.
The sides worked into the early hours of Thursday morning and then returned to talks the next morningto again include NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman and union chief Donald Fehr.
"It's come down to millionaires versus millionaires; and I think ultimately, there has to be some type of agreement to be worked out, so that us the fans can enjoy the season," said Pens fan Robert Woodson, of Penn Hills.
Donald Fehr made two separate appearances Thursday night in front of a large throng of reporters just moments apart after talks with the league ended.
Initially, Fehr said he believed the sides had agreements on some key issues, but he returned soon after to say NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly left a voicemail saying that the players' offer wasn't good enough.
"Maybe with the new year they'll be ready to come back, hopefully," said Sheila McAllister, another Pens fan from Bridgeville.
