Penguins Developing Blueprint For Civic Area Site

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - The Pittsburgh Penguins are proceeding with plans to redevelop the site of the current Civic Arena, though a final decision from the city still hangs in balance.

According to our news partners at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Penguins' executives met with city planning officials to develop a blueprint for the 28-acre site.

The team plans to build approximately 1,100 housing units, 208,000 square feet of shopping space , 606,000 square feet of office space and a 150 room hotel on the current site.

In January, the Civic Arena received a 5-1 vote from the city's Historic Review Commission to head to a formal hearing to determine if the building will receive designation as an historical landmark.

Its supporters would like to see the Igloo reused and be the center point of a Civic Park.

The Penguins and the County Authority continue to argue against keeping the arena, saying it costs about $65,000 a month to maintain the structure and the arena is not bringing in enough revenue to support the building.

The Penguins took control of the site in 2007 in exchange for building the CONSOL Energy Center.
