Penguins: 3 More Players Being Tested For Mumps
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) –Three more Pittsburgh Penguins are being tested for the mumps.
According to the team's official website, Marc-Andre Fleury, Robert Bortuzzo and Olli Maatta are the latest to be tested.
Penguins General Manager Jim Rutherford said they were not feeling well and were being tested as a precaution. Earlier this month, the entire team tested negative.
Test results are expected to be back later this week, but all three are in isolation.
As of today, no Penguins staff are allowed in the locker room unless they first get a mumps vaccination shot.
As a result, all staff, whether they go into the locker room or not, were being offered free immunizations today.
The Penguins also put new policies in place. There will be no more sharing water bottles or Gatorade on the bench and everyone has their own water bottle.
All equipment is being sanitized and bottles of hand sanitizer are being placed in the locker room.
On Tuesday, it was confirmed that Beau Bennett tested positive for the mumps.
Bennett was one of a number of players to visit Children's Hospital last week.
Children's Hospital released a statement to explain how it's handling concern over both patients and staff who may have come in contact with Bennett:
"For those patients and families who visited with Beau who had not received their age appropriate doses of mumps vaccine, we will be placing their children in isolation while they are still in the hospital and will be monitoring them for symptoms of mumps."
Over the weekend, Sidney Crosby was diagnosed with having the mumps as well. However, he is over the infectious stage and skated on his own before the team's practice on Wednesday.
The Penguins also announced Wednesday that they have cancelled all their public appearances for the next two weeks.
