DELMONT (KDKA) -- Wendy Shumaker, 49, is facing charges of homicide by vehicle and DUI after a fatal vehicle-pedestrian accident Friday afternoon.
According to police, one eye witness said he had to yell at Shumaker to stop after she drove over the victim twice.
Shumaker was taken to the police station in Murrysville before heading to a District Court in Greensburg.
Police said Shumaker was driving a white pickup truck and ran over an elderly woman in the crosswalk of the Delmont Walmart parking lot. The victim was identified as Gail Rohrbacher, believed to be in her 80s.
The accident happened directly in front of the store's main entrance. When police questioned Shumaker, they said she apologized for hitting the pedestrian, who she said came out of nowhere. Police said they smelled alcohol on her breath, and she told them she was also taking prescription pain medicine.
Donna Bartha was at the Walmart right after the accident happened.
"The white lines, yield to pedestrians, stop when you see people in those white lines. Apparently she didn't see them or was not paying attention," Bartha said.
Murrysville Police and a State Police Accident Reconstruction team spent more than three hours on the scene taking measurements and photographs.
"I think it's horrible. It's terrible. It's so sad. I can't imagine someone being killed here at Walmart in the parking lot, wow," Sherry Anderson, of Delmont, said.
