MCKEES ROCKS, Pa. (KDKA) - A pedestrian is in critical condition after he was hit on the McKees Rocks Bridge.

The crash was reported shortly before 2 p.m. on Monday. Allegheny County police said when first responders arrived, they found a man who had been hit by a vehicle.

Police said the driver stayed at the scene. The pedestrian was taken to the hospital in critical condition.

The bridge was closed for hours, but PennDOT said right before 5 p.m. that it had reopened.

PennDOT crews had been working on the bridge Monday afternoon for its $22.4 million improvement project. Traffic was restricted from three lanes to two lanes when the accident occurred. Sources told KDKA-TV the victim is not a construction worker.

Homicide detectives and collision reconstruction officers are investigating. No charges have been filed.

The crash comes three days after one person died in a head-on crash on the bridge. Two others were taken to the hospital, one in critical condition and the other in stable condition.

PennDOT spokesperson Steve Cowan said engineers will review the work zone setup and then meet to discuss what they can do, while Allegheny County Council President Pat Catena said the latest crash is alarming.

"It's a major concern. At this point and time, PennDOT and their engineers need to look at this as soon as possible before there is another serious accident or possibly another fatality."

"I'm going to reach out first thing in the morning and try to see what we can do to get this rectified because this can't continue," he added. "I don't want to see another person die on this bridge. I was an advocate of this getting done. Not the cost of this many lives."

Update - Dec. 25, 2022

The pedestrian who was struck and critically injured on the bridge died on Dec. 20, according to an update from the Allegheny County Medical Examiner's office.
