Pearl Harbor Anniversary Prompts Final Push To Raise Funds For North Shore WWII Memorial
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Veterans from World War II gathered on the North Shore today to mark the solemn 70th anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor.
On the banks of Pittsburgh's North Shore, a permanent memorial will one day pay tribute to the greatest generation.
It has been years in the making, and now the final push is on to raise the last of the funds.
Officials say $3.75 million has already been raised, but more is needed to start construction this spring.
The memorial will be made up of panels of glass and granite that describe the contributions of local soldiers.
"One-thousand World War II veterans pass away each and every day, so time is of the essence so that those men and women have an opportunity to see ground broken and see this memorial built on the North Shore," said Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl.
Organizers are urging everyone to go to the memorial website and donate $70 in honor of those who were at Pearl Harbor.
