Paterno's Name Removed From Conference Trophy
PITTSBURGH (93-7 The FAN) — Former Penn State head football coach Joe Paterno had his name removed from the Big Ten championship trophy Monday.
The trophy was originally named the Stagg-Paterno trophy. However, Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany issued a statement and explained that the current scandal at Penn State could potentially affect the meaning of the conference trophy.
Delany said the award shouldn't have any type of controversy surrounding it.
"We believe that it would be inappropriate to keep Joe Paterno's name on the trophy at this time," Delany said. "The trophy and its namesake are intended to be celebratory and aspirational, not controversial."
The trophy will now be called the Stagg Championship Trophy.
"We believe that it's important to keep the focus on the players and the teams that will be competing in the inaugural championship game," Delany said.
