Padres Beat Bucs 7-3, Losing Streak At 10 Games

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Not even a players-only meeting Saturday night could prevent the Pirates' losing streak from reaching double digits.

The San Diego Padres broke the game open with a three-run sixth inning en route to a 7-3 victory at PNC Park Sunday afternoon.

Kevin Correia (12-10) retired the first two batters of the inning, but a single by Jesus Gomez started the rally.

Correia loaded the bases with consecutive walks to Orlando Hudson and Kyle Blanks. Logan Forsythe followed with a two-run single to give the Padres a 3-0 lead.

The single ended Correia's day and Daniel McCutchen was brought into the game in relief.

After an intentional walk to Luis Martinez loaded the bases again, McCutchen uncorked a wild pitch, which allowed Blanks to score from third.

Will Venable's two-run double in the eighth inning put the Padres up 7-0 and all but locked up the series sweep of the Pirates.

Pittsburgh showed some life in the bottom of the eighth with three runs of their own, but it was too little, too late.

Ryan Doumit and Pedro Alvarez led off the inning with singles before Brandon Wood hammered a slider from Chad Qualls over the left field wall.

For San Diego, Mat Latos (6-11) got the win and allowed two runs on four hits while walking one and striking out seven in seven innings of work.

The losing streak now stands at 10 games and the schedule does not get any easier for the Pirates.

Pittsburgh will head to San Francisco to open up a three-game series with the Giants on Monday.

Charlie Morton (8-6, 3.80 ERA) is scheduled to take on Ryan Vogelson (9-1 2.19 ERA) at 10:15 p.m.

After a day off on Thursday, the Pirates will travel to Milwaukee for a three-game series.
