Packers Coach Has Greenfield Ties
GREENFIELD (KDKA) - The overwhelming majority of people in Pittsburgh are excited for the Steelers being in the Super Bowl for the eighth time. However, there's one neighborhood that has mixed feelings because of a native son that will be on the opposite sideline at Cowboys Stadium.
You may have heard of Greenfield, but finding it is a whole different story.
It's a neighborhood that's uniquely Pittsburgh. So much so, that for Super Bowl XLV, many are breaking from the black and gold and pulling for the Green Bay Packers.
The reason?
Green Bay Packers Head Coach Mike McCarthy is a Greenfield native.
"He's contributed to the Greenfield Baseball Association and to the school, St Rosalia's, and the church. He's a very caring person," Jane Medjimorec said.
His roots go all the way back to Saint Rosalia's, where his parents still worship today. Now, he donates almost $100,000 a year to fund scholarships.
"He has helped our school in many ways, and he continues to, and we're very happy about it," St. Rosalia's Principal Sarah Tonski said.
Magee Field, in the heart of Greenfield, is a long way from the frozen tundra of Lambeau Field. While it's been decades since McCarthy took the field there, ask any of the parents, or anyone who has played there in the decades since and they'll tell you one thing.
He never forgot where he came from.
"He's a good guy, a good family man. You couldn't get a better picture out of all of this," Mike Davern said.
One this is certain. When the Steelers and Packers meet on Feb. 6, Greenfield residents will have a tough time picking a side to root for.
