Pa. Hotel Donates Mattresses To Flood-Ravaged W.Va. Town
CRANBERRY (KDKA) -- A hotel in Cranberry is sending mattresses to a small town in West Virginia, and volunteers who loaded those mattresses should sleep well tonight.
Residents of Richwood, W.Va., were devastated by floodwaters that raged through the streets a month ago, destroying homes and lives. Many were left without so much as a mattress to sleep on.
But help is on the way.
Some five hours north in Cranberry, volunteers at the new Doubletree Hotel load a truck with used mattresses and bed frames - West Virginia bound.
Fatima Santiago is human resources manager at the hotel. But in this case, she's just one of many chipping in.
"We have our sales managers, our front desk agents, banquet department, you name them, we have them," she said. "Everybody here is a very close team, and we're very passionate about what we're doing. And that's why we're here."
The mattresses are about four years old, but high quality, left over from the Sheraton Hotel which once occupied this space.
General Manager Lance Rihn says they're being donated through a group called "Rebuild Richwood."
"They sent a truck up here to pick up the beds and everything else that we have to offer to them, which is a great thing," he said. "Giving back to them is something that means a lot to us and our organization."
"Thinking that we are doing this for these people, now they have something to be thankful for," Santiago added. "It's very, very rewarding for all of us here."
The hotel will continue to send mattresses through the end of August. By the end of the month, they will have delivered 275 mattresses to the flood-ravaged people of West Virginia.
