On A Positive Note: Operation Warm gives coats to kids in Aliquippa
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Kids are always excited when it's time for physical education class at school, but on Tuesday, the gymnasium at Aliquippa Elementary served as a space not only to get fit, but to get fitted.
Hundreds of kids received brand new winter coats as part of a collaboration between the non-profit Operation Warm and the company FedEx.
Operation Warm delivers coats and shoes to children who need them, such as those in low income areas, homeless shelters and foster care.
But the nonprofit says they provide "more than a coat." They also give emotional warmth, confidence to socialize and succeed and the hope of a brighter future.
"I hope they're encouraged, I hope they feel some love and compassion, hope they're excited that Christmas comes a little early this year as they're coming to school to get their education," FedEx's Ryan Parsons said.
Over the past 23 years, Operation Warm has served more than 4 million children in more than 2,000 communities, and it's all thanks to those who donate and volunteer.
"It goes beyond just a coat," said kindergarten teacher Gina Battaglini. "For us teachers, we have to make sure our kids are – their needs are met first before we can even touch academics. So this means so much to us."
