Officials Rescue Deer Stuck In Fineview Fence

FINEVIEW (KDKA) – Emergency officials worked together to free a deer that had become trapped in a fence Tuesday morning in Fineview.

According to police, authorities were alerted to the situation along Lanark Street near Cemetery Avenue around 7:15 a.m.

Animal Care and Control, along with Pittsburgh Police and Public Works crews arrived at the scene about 15 minutes later.

"Every call we go to we try and do the most humane thing for any animal we deal with," Animal Care and Control Officer Jim Genco said.

Initially, there was concern because the deer's legs were trapped in the narrow bars of the fence. It appeared as if the deer had tried to squeeze through and got stuck.

In an effort to keep the doe calm, an officer from Zone One grabbed a blanket from his vehicle and covered her. It worked and she immediately settled down.

Public Works first tried cable cutters, but couldn't break through the thick steel bars. Next, officials used a compressor to pry the bars open. At that time, responders freed the deer carefully.

"Pulled the deer through and then we kind of had to let go right away and everybody had to get out of the way so the deer could run away," Genco said.

Once free, the deer ran down the hill into a wooded area.

"It was definitely a team effort by multiple departments and we're very appreciative of the happy ending here," Pittsburgh Public Safety Spokeswoman Emily Schaffer said.
