Officials Meet With DA To Discuss Shooting Incidents At Monroeville Mall
MONROEVILLE (KDKA) – After a large party turned into a brawl last weekend and a shooting that wounded three people at the Monroeville Mall, the Allegheny County District Attorney met with local officials Thursday.
Allegheny County DA Stephen Zappala, his detective team, Monroeville Mall management and Monroeville elected officials met at council chambers behind closed doors for a private meeting.
"The mall has been told that the best deterrent to crime is the fact that you will be seen and we know who you are and you will get caught," said Zappala. "That moves crime out of an area."
Zappala says the Liquor Control Board will also look after Winghart's restaurant after a college party with 500 to 1,000 people got out of control Friday night, during which shots were fired. No one was hit.
"The thing that happened at Winghart's, we did ask the LCB to take a look at their license," said Zappala.
Zappala also said that February's shooting inside the mall was between two groups that were the objects of a grand jury drug investigation. He says the Monroeville area has become a hotbed for drug trafficking.
That shooting left Tom and Mary Singleton, who were shopping in Macy's, wounded. Both were shot and are still recovering from their injuries.
The security measures put in place are a work in progress, says the Mayor of Monroeville, which could eventually include monitoring social media.
