Officials Kick Off 2013 KD Turkey Fund
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - It's the time of year again when you can help make a difference in someone's life.
The 2013 KDKA-TV Turkey Fund kicked off today!
Thanks to your generous donations, the KDKA-TV Turkey Fund has been able to provide Thanksgiving dinners to families in need for decades. All of the money raised stays right here in this area to help families in need.
"We continue to serve the regions, about 120,000 households a month. And what is particularly challenging is the number of new families we see, families that have lost their jobs, and reach out for help. Then, when you consider the holidays on top of that, it makes it a really challenging time for families. This fund means a lot to us" Cindy Moore from the Greater Pittsburgh Community Food Bank said.
KDKA's Jennifer Antkowiak Reports:
Moore said she's overwhelmed by the response she gets back from families who are helped and share their gratitude for the help from the community.
PNC Bank President Sy Holzer sees that too. Once again this year, the KDKA-TV Turkey Fund will get a big boost from PNC Bank. If you take a donation of $50 dollars or more to any PNC Bank branch, they will match it.
"What's so much fun is to hear the stories from all of the tellers, all of the people who serve customers. They love this as much as we do, as much as I do and they tell the stories, and they get a smile on their face," Holzer said.
Holzer said the effort goes straight to his heart. He doesn't want to think about one family having to go without a holiday meal and he loves to be part of a campaign.
"I think Pittsburgh is as good right now as it's ever been and I think people are sharing in the growth and prosperity and all of the better things that are occurring in Pittsburgh," Holzer said. "From my standpoint, anything I can do to raise one more dollar to feed families in our community who are in need, there is still that group of people."
Over the years, it's been wonderful to see how many people get involved with the campaign. Schools that KDKA-TV Meteorologist Dennis Bowman visits for weather presentations are always very proud to present him with a check for the fund. Schools contribute between $10,000 and $15,000 annually.
For many, donating to the KDKA-TV Turkey Fund has become a tradition.
"I'd just encourage people to dig deep this year. The need is out there, it continues to grow. And so this is an opportunity for us as Pittsburghers to shine one more time, and show our community how much we care," Moore said.
