Black Ice Could Be To Blame In McKees Rocks Bridge Crash
McKEES ROCKS (KDKA) -- Stowe Township police say black ice may be to blame in an early morning accident on the McKees Rocks Bridge that claimed the life of one man.
The crash forced officials to close the bridge down for most of the morning, but the span has since been reopened to traffic.
The bridge was shut down just before 7:30 a.m. after an SUV struck a large hauler truck.
Police, firefighters and a crew from the Allegheny County Medical Examiner's Office were on the scene for about three hours.
According to the Stowe Township police chief, ice may have played a role.
"Allegheny County is investigating; had a fatality," said Chief Frank Marcow, of the Stowe Township Police Department. "The road conditions weren't the best."
The chief reports that the man who was driving the SUV was crossing the bridge from the McKees Rocks side when he hit a patch of ice and slammed into the truck.
The driver was pronounced dead at the scene. His identity has not yet been released.
Officials say the driver of the truck was not hurt, but was reportedly shaken up following the accident.
KDKA's Sarah Arbogast reports that police say the truck belonged to a wholesale building materials company based in the Pittsburgh area. They had no comment following the crash.
