Officials Break Ground On Homewood Senior Housing Development

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) - Officials broke ground on the city's newest senior housing development Tuesday morning.

The apartment complex is said to be the first piece of a redevelopment plan in more than 15 years.

On this gloomy day, the sun was still shining down on Homewood as ground was broken for low-income housing for senior citizens.

"Today we're here to announce the Homewood Senior Station Apartments, which will provide 41 new apartments for senior residents as well as support services and retail on the first floor as well as a public plaza," Mayor Luke Ravenstahl said.

The mayor was joined by community leaders, including Councilman Rev. Ricky Burgess who represents Homewood and those who live in the community.

"This is the most significant development in Homewood in the last 20 years. It is a unique development, the first of its kind," Burgess said.

The $11.5 million project will provide housing for low-income seniors 55-years-old and older. The four-story building is said to be just the beginning of what will come to Homewood.

"It's the first of rebuilding our business district. I think this project is strategically planned, strategically located in a great area near the busway and I think it can really help other things happen in Homewood," Jerome Jackson from Operation Better Block said.

This first phase is set to be complete in December 2013.
