Officers' Reinstatement Prompts Protest
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- A protest took place this afternoon in downtown Pittsburgh over the reinstatement of three city police officers who were accused in the beating of a CAPA High School student last year.
A number of organizations have expressed concerns over how the teenager, Jordan Miles, ended up in the hospital after the encounter in Homewood.
The demonstration started at noon on the steps of the City County Building today. The protesters could be seen holding signs, one say "Justice for Jordan."
The U.S. Justice Department announced Wednesday that it would not pursue charges against the officers because they did not have sufficient evidence that the officers violated Miles' civil rights.
On Thursday, Pittsburgh Mayor Luke Ravenstahl said the officers - Richard Ewing, Michael Saldutte and David Sisak - would be reinstated, but they will not return to Zone 5.
However, at Thursday night's NAACP dinner, President Gayle Moss spoke out against the reinstatement of the officers.
The NAACP is outraged. It's like a modern day lynching," she said. "Three people at 200 and some pounds per person to beat up one young man that weighed less than 140 pounds… should be allowed to get away with that? We're not going to stand still for it. If we have to go to the street, we will."
Pittsburgh Police Chief Nate Harper called the entire incident a teachable moment for the community.
