Officer Involved In Monroeville Crash, At Least 1 Injured

MONROEVILLE (KDKA) – At least one person was injured in a three-car accident involving a police SUV in Monroeville Monday afternoon.

According to officials at the scene, the accident happened on Route 22 shortly after noon.

A witness said the police SUV had its lights on as it was going through an intersection. At that time, there was a collision with a silver car.

"The first cruiser went through the light, and about 3 to 5 seconds later the SUV cruiser came through, they both had lights and sirens on," said a witness who did not want to be identified.

The man says the silver car got his attention, because it was moving towards the street.

"The silver car kept coming out of the business plaza, did not -- the car didn't stop," he added. "You saw the cruiser coming, everybody here saw it. I mean, I don't know what she saw. And then he hit her, that car go tossed into that one and that's what you got left of it."

The female driver of the car was trapped and crews had to cut the roof off to free her.

The witness said the officer appeared to do everything he could to avoid the collision.

The SUV also struck another vehicle. It is not known if anyone in that vehicle was injured.

The officer involved reportedly was able to get out of their vehicle and check on the other individuals involved.

"The officer was responding with his emergency equipment activated to assist another officer with a felony stop of some type," said Allegheny County Police Lt. Andrew Schurman.

The woman driving the silver car was taken to a local hospital for treatment, but the extent of her injuries is unknown.

Police say they were originally going after a car that seemed suspicious.

Eventually that car was stopped and the driver scuffled with police along the Parkway and took off on foot. The driver was 28-year-old Martell Harris. Police say they found a number of drugs and cash in his car.

Allegheny County Police are investigating the accident.
