Off-Duty Police Hires Questioned
PITTSBURGH (NewsRadio 1020 KDKA) - Pittsburgh City Councilwoman Theresa Kail-Smith, the chair of the city's public safety committee, is teaming up with Pittsburgh Public Safety Director Michael Huss to propose police policy changes.
The two want to make changes in how the city collects and uses money that businesses pay when they hire off-duty Pittsburgh Police Officers.
Smith says she has proposed new legislation in council to create a trust fund for these special details. Nearly 30 officials from the Pittsburgh Police were in attendance for the meeting.
"The move is an effort to correct and rectify past problems with city funds," Smith said.
"The hiring of additional officers to offset potential overtime is also being considered," she added.

Huss says he would like to place the money into three separate trust funds. The proposal stems from an ongoing FBI Investigation into an unauthorized Credit Union account that the city was not authorized to place money into.
