Obama Supporters Overcome By Heat At Rally
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Hundreds of people went to Oakland to hear President Barack Obama speak; however, some of them couldn't take the heat.
A number of people required medical attention because they either passed out or suffered from other heat-related issues.
As the crowd grew, the first aid station on Carnegie Mellon University's campus was nearly overwhelmed with patients.
"It's been chaotic," Heather Yankura, a nurse practitioner, said. "We've had several patients passing out, a lot of heat stroke, a lot of dehydration."
The hot sun was too much for Barbara English.
"I just blacked out," she said. "I don't really know what happened. I don't' know anything. When I woke up, I was here."
Outside, the water station was busy and lots of volunteers were spraying mist to keep people cool.
Officials say 13 people were taken to the hospital for heat-related illnesses.
