Nurse To Stand Trial On Child Endangerment Charges

UNIONTOWN (KDKA) - A nurse responsible for the care of a 7-month-old baby boy with respiratory problems will stand trial for endangering the welfare of that child who died while in her care.

Four people testified on Wednesday at Jackie Yeagley's preliminary hearing in Uniontown, including the parents of the 7-month-old baby.

Derek Miskanin, Jr. was born premature; and when he was released from the hospital, he was connected to a ventilator at home.

Yeagley, a registered nurse was one of his caregivers. But on the night of Dec. 3, 2010, almost 90 minutes into Yeagley's 11p.m. shift, something would go terribly wrong.

The infant's condition worsened and within hours he would die at Uniontown Hospital.

The prosecution says Yeagley did not respond quickly enough, failed to immediately notify the parents and did not properly implement resuscitation techniques.

The defense says this was indeed a tragedy but it was not a crime.

Yeagley still holds her nursing license, but her attorney would not say if she presently has a job.
