Northgate H.S. Students Up To The Challenge Of Bringing "Mary Poppins" To Stage

BELLEVUE (KDKA) -- Some local students are flying high over the chance to perform "Mary Poppins" this year at their school.

The musical is a big production and students in Bellevue are up to the challenge.

It's not every day that "Mary Poppins" is allowed to be performed by drama students. It was just released this fall to be performed on the amateur level, and students at Northgate High School hope to take the show to new heights.

Laken Burns is playing Mary Poppins.

"I fly out and in and out again, and over the rooftops, and it's really exciting," says Burns.

Bert, the jack of all trades, is played by Paul Boyce.

"It's really cool being up there and being weightless and doing front flips in the air and sliding around across the stage," he says.

But getting the kids to fly is no easy feat. They've had lots of training.

Northgate is using the same international company that designed and installed the flying for "Mary Poppins" on Broadway.

"We decided to leap this year and take it to another level and really give the kids an opportunity to challenge themselves," said Kaitlin Mausser, the show's choreographer.

Up, up and away they go.

"We've worked really hard to get a realistic set, so we have set pieces that are larger than any we have ever done," said Karen Klicker, the musical director. "So we are trying to bring our audience a really great theatrical experience."

The school's opening performance of "Mary Poppins" will be Saturday, March 21.
