North Side Shooting Kills 1
NORTH SIDE (KDKA) – Police are investigating after one person was shot and killed on the North Side early Sunday morning.
According to police, the shooting happened near the intersection of Alpine and Garfield Avenues around 2:40 a.m.
People who live near the intersection say they were awakened by four gunshots. Pam Grove came outside and saw a man lying on the ground in front of a parked car.
"By the time I got out and ran out the door, the police had already come at the end of the street," said Grove. "They came over and one of them checked the guy's pulse and he was gone."
The Allegheny County Medical Examiner's Office identifies the victim as 29-year-old Darius Grimsley.
He suffered a gunshot wound to the chest and was pronounced dead at the scene shortly before 3 a.m.
A neighbor who did not want to be identified said she knew the victim.
"I have a child the same age as Darius. [He] was a very nice young man, he didn't bother anybody and it's just a shame," she said.
No motive was given for the shooting and no arrest has been made. Police say they are hoping a video surveillance camera near the intersection can help shed some light on what happened.
Meanwhile, people who knew Grimsley say he worked every day, had a young daughter and was planning to get married.
"I would see him with his daughter from time to time," said one person. "He was a real nice guy and he's going to be missed."
Anyone with information is asked to call the Homicide Unit at (412)-323-7161.
