NORTH SIDE (KDKA) – Two children were injured when their school van was involved in a head-on collision in Pittsburgh's North Side neighborhood on Tuesday.

According to police, the crash happened near the intersection of Brighton Road and California Avenue around 9 a.m.

The head-on crash involved an ABC Transit Company school students van and a BMW. The van was transporting students to a nearby charter school.

Two 9-year-old students were taken to Children's Hospital in stable condition. One suffered a minor injury, while the other suffered a moderate leg injury.

The driver of the van was taken to Mercy to be treated for minor injuries.

Police said the driver of the BMW, Nitoya Steward, 28, of Allegheny Center, was not hurt.

A few people were standing around while crews cleaned up debris on the road, but no one we spoke with saw the crash happen. One man, who didn't want to go on camera, said there are a lot of crashes at that intersection.

He said people speed and didn't seem too surprised by what happened.

Meanwhile, Steward is being charged by summons for causing an accident with injuries while not licensed.
