Parking Rates Increasing For North Shore Lots And Garages

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- Parking rates are going up at garages and lots on the North Shore.
It will not affect event rates, but commuters will notice the difference.
"Everyone is really upset," said Kathy Suvoy, who parks there everyday.
Jim Shanley, from the North Side, said: "They raise the rates, and people can't afford it."
Rates at the lots will go up a $1 a day, which at most lots means an increase from $7 to $8.
Monthly lease rates at the parking garages are going up, too.
The heftiest is at the West General Robinson Street Garage where it goes up $30 to $170 a month. These changes affect daytime parking, but event rates will stay the same.
Merrill Stabile, the president of Alco Parking, said, "We do this periodically. We review the rates. If we feel the demand is there, we adjust them and some of those locations haven't adjusted in years."
But Stabile says it's not just his company that gets the revenue when the rates go up, so does the Stadium Authority and the Sports and Exhibition Authority, and another entity.
"Nobody makes more money than the city when parking rates go up cause there's a 37.5 percent parking tax, which is included in all these rates," said Stabile.
He says it's still cheaper to park on the North Shore because rates are 40 percent to 50 percent cheaper than Downtown parking prices.
These increases should take effect by the end of this year.
