Northeast Prepares For More Snow, Many Flights Cancelled
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – With some predicting a snowstorm of "historic" proportions in Philadelphia, New York and Boston, it appears Pittsburgh dodged a bullet.
However, there could be a ripple effect here.
Pittsburgh International Airport reports more than 30 flights cancelled that were either headed to or coming from East Coast destinations.
"They actually started cancelling flights last night and then early this morning, with the hope that people would call ahead and check in before they get to the airport," said Alyson Walls, a PR supervisor at the airport.
Duquense Light has already sent 20 employees with a specialty in clearing downed trees to Massachusetts. A spokesperson says crews who work on lines may also go, if it's determined that they're not needed here.
The American Red Cross chapter in Pittsburgh says it's ready to send volunteers to Eastern Pennsylvania if help is needed.
"Right now, they are staffing the emergency operations center in Harrisburg for the state, and we have people who are on call right now for that. The other needs they might have would be sheltering," said Patricia Waldinger from the Red Cross.
She says volunteers from here could help if people on the other end of the state are forced out their homes and need to stay in a temporary shelter, such as a high school gym or community center.
On Monday, Gov. Tom Wolf signed a disaster emergency proclamation to make it easier to get money and resources to areas that may need it.
