There was no "unauthorized person" inside Pittsburgh Carmalt PreK-8 before evacuation, district says
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) — The claim of an "unauthorized person" that led to the lockdown and evacuation of Carmalt PreK-8 last week was unsubstantiated, Pittsburgh Public Schools said.
In a letter to families, Pittsburgh Public Schools Superintendent Dr. Wayne Walters said that after a thorough review of surveillance footage and several interviews, the district determined there wasn't enough evidence to substantiate the reports of an "unauthorized person" on campus.
"The initial report of an individual seen on camera was confirmed to be a staff member. As a result, the investigation has concluded without any findings to support the initial claims. While this may provide some answers, we acknowledge the gravity of the situation and the fear it may have caused," Walters wrote in his letter.
The school is now considering adding more cameras to "key areas" and the district is proposing deploying school-based security personnel "to enhance on-site safety."
Walters acknowledged that during the incident, communication could have been more effective and he said that parents' feedback will inform how the district approaches similar instances in the future.
"We regret any distress this incident may have caused and remain dedicated to maintaining the highest standards of safety in our schools. We hope this conclusion brings some closure and reassurance," Walters wrote.
