NHL General Managers Discuss Increasing Video Replay

BOCA RATON, Fla. (KDKA/AP) - The NHL general managers finished up three days of meetings in Florida with a discussion about increasing video replay and new rules for shootouts.

While some of the general managers would like to expand video replay in general, the NHL would like them to be more specific in their request.

One problem with expanding video replay, according to NHL vice president Colin Campbell, is there is no unified standard among arenas when it comes to the number of cameras and the angle those cameras are set to.

Campbell said ideally the NHL would like to place cameras in the net for the regular season, much like they do for a portion of the Stanley Cup playoffs.

But "it's expensive," Campbell said. "We do it for the last two rounds. But there are concerns with it, like every time the net moves the camera needs to be readjusted."

Another area of conversation on the final day of the general manager meetings were shootouts.

"We actually spent a lot of time on the shootout, more time than I ever would've thought, to be honest with you," Penguins general manager Ray Shero said. "You start to get into these spinaramas and if the guy is stopping his progress. We have to make sure everybody knows what the rules are.

"I'm actually not a proponent of the spinaramas in the shootout," Shero said. "It's about entertainment, I understand that."

The prior two days of meetings were focused on head hits and finding a way to decrease concussions.

The general managers decided against banning head shots in exchange for tighter enforcement of the current rules on charging and boarding.
