NFL Network Analyst Charles Davis Breaks Down Steelers' Top CB Options
PITTSBURGH (93-7 The Fan) – NFL Network analyst Charles Davis joined "The Fan Morning Show" Tuesday to preview the NFL Scouting Combine.
Davis broke down a couple of the top cornerbacks in this year's draft class, as the Steelers should be very interested in that position come April.
Davis said he doesn't see a clear-cut top target among the cornerbacks projected to be first round picks.
"I don't think there's that much separation between all of them, ultimately," Davis said.
When it comes to former Washington cornerback Marcus Peters, Davis sees a lot of good and a lot of bad.
"For Marcus Peters, his biggest thing, I think, is going to be the interviews with the teams," Davis said. "Look at the last couple of years. Steve Sarkisian's staff leaves to go to USC, the interim coach Marcus Tuiasosopo is there, they're getting ready for a bowl game. He suspends Marcus Peters for the bowl game. Got back the next year, a fresh start, Chris Petersen and his staff, he gets in trouble during a game with a sideline tantrum, gets suspended for a game. Later on in the year, more issues crop up. Some of them may be urban legends, but confrontations between he and the coaching staff have been reported. He ends up getting kicked off the team."
"So, people are going to have to do their homework. What was that all about? What was the deal with that? Because Marcus Peters' talent is tremendous. So, you're going to want to make sure you don't pass up on a great talent who had a couple of issues if they are correctable. But, if they are the type of issues you think will continue to linger and be commonplace, then you may be looking elsewhere."
Davis thinks another cornerback also has a good shot of being the first one off the board.
"I don't think there's a ton of gap between all these corners," Davis said. "But, size and playing style may dictate why some teams may like some corners better than others. But, Trae Waynes from Michigan State may very well be the guy that's on top of the board when it's all said and done."
