New Poll Shows Majority Of Catholics Support Same-Sex Marriage
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- A poll out Friday shows that a majority of Catholics now support same-sex marriage.
The Quinnipiac University poll found 54 percent now support gay marriage, 38 oppose it.
Local Catholics leaving a fish fry at Sacred Heart Parish in Shadyside had mixed opinions.
"You're talking about homosexual marriage and lesbian marriage, too, I guess. I can't say I approve of it," said Don O'Neil of Canonsburg.
"I have friends that are gay, and I believe that they have the rights same as me and my spouse," said Kim Anglin of Sharpsville. "I would be very happy for them."
It was 2008 when Bishop David Zubik, of the Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh, testified on the subject: "Very clearly we need to have a marriage amendment to the Pennsylvania Constitution that recognizes marriage for what it is, a sacred covenant between husband and wife."
Two Catholics who support gay marriage didn't want to show their faces on camera because they feared repercussions.
KDKA's David Highfield wasn't able to talk to Bishop Zubik Friday night, but Diocese Spokesperson Ron Lengwin said he'd like to know what is meant by Catholics, whether it was active Catholics who were polled or maybe people who could be considered cultural Catholics.
President Obama came out in favor of gay marriage last year.
