New Pill Promises To Wake You Up Refreshed, Energized

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- It's no secret; Americans are not getting enough sleep.

There are sleeping pills you can take at night and energy supplements you can take in the morning, but now there's also something you can take before you go to bed that claims to get you going when you wake up.

It's called Wake Up On Time, manufactured by the Rise and Shine Corporation.

KDKA's Kym Gable talked to a Bethel Park couple that tried it for a couple weeks.

The label promises you'll wake up feeling great and full of energy.

A special coating on the tablet delays the release of the main ingredient, Guarana Seed Extract, with 22 percent caffeine. If you take it before bedtime, it should gently wake you up six to eight hours later.

"I was nervous about that because it says delayed release, and I thought, 'Well, here we go, maybe I'll be up at 3 a.m.," Rachelle Edwards told KDKA jokingly.

The family is health conscious and active, so they did their research.

Rachelle's husband, Brian, said, "The first thing I did was look at the ingredients to see if there was anything that I really didn't know what it was."

Besides the caffeine, there are mostly just B-vitamins and herbal extracts.

Dr. Patrick Strollo is the director of the Sleep Medicine Center at UPMC.

He cautions that Wake Up On Time is not FDA-regulated and did not undergo any clinical trials.

"Whether this product actually doesn't release caffeine to the point of when a person awakes or not, I would have to see some additional data," said Dr. Strollo.

For Rachelle, it's working, and she plans to buy another bottle soon.

"It's really nice not to have to drag myself out of bed," said Rachelle. "I really think it's helped me. I'm not a morning person at all, but now I am kind of a morning person."
