New Military Commissary, Post Exchange Open In Moon Twp.
MOON TOWNSHIP (KDKA) -- The ribbon was cut and people from the area on Tuesday celebrated the grand opening of a new military commissary and Post Exchange in Moon Township.
The commissary is a full service grocery store, and for the first time, it has a deli and bakery.
The Post Exchange is like a department store, selling clothes and other non-perishable goods.
Everything is sold at a discounted rate for current and retired military members and families who live in western Pennsylvania, Ohio and West Virginia.
"Commissaries overall will save 30 percent on your shopping," Pittsburgh Area Commissary spokesperson Rick Brink said. "That's 30 percent of your grocery dollars that you get to save for other things for your family and life."
"If you have kids, you understand how hard it is to raise kids, and we have three and one more on the way, the commissary really helps us out financially as a support system," Major Douglas Harsh, with the U.S. Army, said.
U.S. Sen. Bob Casey was among those who worked to make the facility possible.
"It's one of the few ways not only our government, but our society can express gratitude for what these families have done for the country," Sen. Casey said.
It took eight years to secure proper funding for a new store.
The old location, the Charles E. Kelly support facility was located in Collier Township, and it officially closed on Oct. 18.
Already, customers have noticed a difference.
"It's so much better. The aisles are nice and wide, everything looks bright and shiny, brand new, beautiful place," Sally Cordis, a veteran's wife, said.
Military families, service members and veterans will have access to both the commissary and the exchange Tuesdays thru Saturdays.
