New Jersey Couple Staying With Local Relatives After Sandy Forces Them Out

JEFFERSON HILLS (KDKA) -- A couple from New Jersey who was forced out of their home by Hurricane Sandy is now staying in our area.

Stefan, 87, and 91-year-old Anna Kynik are living with their son and daughter-in-law in Jefferson Hills.

Mr. Kynik said he's never seen a storm like Sandy, and Mrs. Kynik said that with no electricity she was freezing.

"They said they were very cold, and I knew they wouldn't leave their home, so we went over," said their daughter-in-law Kitty Lesko. "I went over, got in the car and got them."

Lesko says when she got to their home in Manville, N.J., she realized it's not just the coastal towns that suffered damage. Manville is more than two hours inland.

"The roads were shut down," she said. "It was complete blackness."

She says she found flooded roads, trees down and billboards blown over.

"I really think the whole state of New Jersey is having issues," said Lesko. "That whole area is just devastated."

It's unclear how long the Kyniks will be staying in Western Pennsylvania, but they anticipate it will be at least seven to 10 days before the power in that area of New Jersey is restored.
