New Cell Phone Scam Targets Verizon Customers
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – We love our phones, but the bill, not so much.
So if someone calls and offers to knock a few dollars off, you may be inclined to follow the instructions.
"It sounds legit," one woman said.
But in the case of MyVerizon59, you would be playing into the hands of scamming phishers when you log into their website, which looks legitimate.
"Oh, absolutely," said FBI Supervisory Special Agent Keith Mularski. "Otherwise, the scammers wouldn't be successful."
An authentic look, plus a financial reward is enough for some to bite.
"I would try," one woman said.
Although others said it sounded "shady" or that they'd Google it before clicking.
And if you did research it, you would find MyVerizon59 has many predecessors, only the number has been changed.
"It's very easy for them to go out and register a new domain," said Mularski. "We shut down this site and 10 minutes later a new site is registered with just a variation, so it's a whack-a-mole type game sometimes."
But what you can lose is no game.
"They get all your stuff," one man said.
If you have auto bill pay, your bank account is open to the phishers not to mention:
"Your home address, a credit card number, so there are a lot of different things that they can get from that," said Mularski.
Verizon declined to comment on camera, but did send a statement saying that they had been made aware of MyVerizon59.com and that that site has been shut down.
