Natural Gas Smells Reported Across The City, No Cause Found

PITTSBURGH (KDKA) – Dozens of firefighters and emergency responders spent the morning looking for a possible gas leak.

Since about 8 a.m., many people throughout Pittsburgh have called 911 reporting the smell of natural gas and several people were sickened, including at Children's Hospital.

However, authorities have yet to determine a source of the supposed gas leak or even if there is a gas leak.

Authorities say calls started in the Strip District and made their way to Lawrenceville.

"We had a few addresses on Liberty Avenue, a few addresses on Smallman Street, some on Penn," Pittsburgh Fire Bureau Bat. Chief John Walsh said. "It seems like whatever it was moved west to east because that's how the progression of the calls came, so all the calls were investigated."

"So far we've come up negative and we have Equitable Gas investigating it," he said.

Equitable Gas investigated the smell near Children's Hospital around 9 a.m.

Hospital officials say several people reported smelling natural gas before getting headaches and feeling sick. They say only outpatients were affected by the smell.

Everyone that was reported feeling sick is now doing better and the hospital is working as normal again.
