Native South Hills Couple Among Those Devastated By Colo. Flooding
MOUNT LEBANON (KDKA) -- Hundreds of people in Colorado remain out of their homes after record-breaking and devastating floods earlier this month.
Among those affected is couple from Pittsburgh's South Hills.
Tamara Stark, of Mount Lebanon, has been getting firsthand accounts on the situation in flood-stricken Colorado from her 26-year-old daughter, Alyse.
She has been living in Lyons, Colo., with her boyfriend, Andrew Downs, who is also from the South Hills.
The couple's rented home is still standing after the unprecedented flooding this month, but people are not being allowed back into town by FEMA because of widespread destruction.
Stark said the couple and their dog, Goose, are all safe and at now staying temporarily in an empty home nearby that was not damaged.
"They don't have a house; they had to throw away their food; they're living for a month in one place," said Stark. "They don't know what's next and it's hard, but they're okay.
Stark said the worst part was not bring able to reach her daughter for days on her cell phone at the height of the flooding.
"They were literally in Lyons for days and days with no water and no sewer and no electricity and no cell phone. I couldn't get ahold of her," said Stark. "That was the worst part."
The disaster has left at least eight people dead, and an estimated 2,000 homes damaged or destroyed.
