Nasty Weather Threatening Holiday Travel Plans Across Country
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- The nasty weather is threatening travel for millions of Americans in other parts of the country as well.
Here are some tips for travelers hoping to make it to their destination in time for Thanksgiving.
The storm is moving east and dropping snow in Ohio and a layer of ice on parts of western Virginia.
Holiday travelers are getting worried.
"It's going to be a very interesting week," said Shannon Harkness, a holiday traveler.
According to AAA, more than 43 million people will travel this Thanksgiving.
The bad weather already cancelled hundreds of flights in the southwest. Forecasters say air travel will be tricky along the East Coast over the next few days.
CBS News Travel Editor Peter Greenberg says to avoid delays - people flying need to try to leave early.
"Some of the airlines are actually incentivizing them saying if you leave today, not tomorrow, we'll give you a $50 bonus," said Greenberg. "Just get out now because it's going to get bad."
Most people will drive, but some people are choosing to get off the roadways and hit the rails.
"The railroad is a little bit more immune to some of the weather conditions that can make driving or flying or other modes of transportation a little bit of a hassle," said Craig Schultz, of Amtrak.
Forecasters say conditions will improve just in time for an easier trip back home.
