Music, Parade And Fireworks Expected At First Night
PITTSBURGH (KDKA) -- For the young and young of heart, this is a night to sweep out the old and hope for the new.
And throughout the Cultural District, it's a night of take your pick.
"Ninety percent of the activities are indoors, so there's really no reason to stay away," Pittsburgh Cultural Trust Marketing Manager Derek Scalzott said.
Music ranges from soul at the Benedum Center, to brass at the Byham Theater, to acoustic at the August Wilson Center and blues at Fifth Avenue Place -- and that's just music.
The 14 square-blocks of the cultural trust is pack with things to do and there is something for everyone.
Those indoor activities will require a First Night button, which at this hour can be purchased on site for $10.
"We're offering over 150 attractions tonight for that cost," Scalzott said.
As always, you'll want to find your way to Penn Avenue near 8 p.m. for the annual First Night parade.
This year it's featuring a theme of lights.
As the clock winds to 10:30 p.m., you'll want to be getting into position near the Highmark building where the Dirty Dozen brass band will ramp things up too.
"The future of Pittsburgh grand finale right here," Scalzott said.
That's where the future of Pittsburgh ball will rise to the midnight finale.
"Ours is meant to go up, so it represents hope for the future of Pittsburgh," Joel Kennedy with the lighting crew said.
And as the clock and calendar roll into the new year, the Zambelli folks will go to work.
"We've created this to be very dynamic," Bob Zeletski with Zambelli Fireworks said. "Lots of noise, lots of color and we're going to be staging from this room and Fifth Ave. Place and a man lift out on Penn Ave."
