Mt. Lebanon Grad Taken In 1st Round Of MLB Draft
PITTSBURGH (KDKA)- Mt. Lebanon graduate Ian Happ was selected in the first round of the MLB Draft Monday night.
Happ, a switch-hitting outfielder at the University of Cincinnati, was taken No. 9 overall by the Chicago Cubs.
Happ is a junior at the University of Cincinnati, and is the first Bearcat ever taken in the first round of the MLB Draft.
Happ wasn't highly recruited out of high school, where he posted a .449 average in four seasons for the Mt. Lebanon Blue Devils. He would become the first Mt. Lebanon player to be selected in the first round.
In fact, the previous highest pick was when Josh Wilson went in the third round in 1999.
He hit .338 with 25 homers and 107 RBIs in three season at Cincinnati.
Happ spent two summers in Cape Cod, Massachusetts playing in the Cape Cod League. His impressive play in that league, a league where top college players compete, really increased his value in this year's draft.
