Capable Capers & Colts Face Important Test

For the Pittsburgh Steelers, the standard is the standard, as head coach Mike Tomlin would say. The standard also remains high for Wayne Capers, the son of a former Steeler by the same name.

Despite tough luck the last two years in the form of two leg injuries that prematurely ended his sophomore and junior seasons, the senior quarterback is living up to that legacy and leading Chartiers Valley as confidently as ever.

Capers has completed 50% of his passes for 576 yards and six TD's against just one interception, guiding the Colts to a 3-0 conference record and 4-1 overall mark since moving from receiver back under center after a season-ending spleen injury to Christian Kuntz.

Last week he showcased his ability as a dual-threat passer by racking up 229 all-purpose yards and four total touchdowns in a 36-10 win over visiting Belle Vernon. Capers has run for 358 yards in 2011, averaging nine per carry.

That sets the stage for our "UPMC Centers for Rehab Services Game of the Week" on SportsRadio 93.7 The Fan, in which Capers and the Colts will hit the road to meet Thomas Jefferson in a battle for first place in the Class AAA Big Eight Conference. Kickoff is set for 7:30 Friday night, with MSA Sports' Don Rebel hosting pre-game coverage at 6:00.

"Mr. High School Sports" caught up with Capers to discuss his transition from his natural receiver position back to quarterback, and whether it has been difficult to put his health issues behind him. The possible Pitt prospect also gives us a recruiting update, and tells us how he thinks Chartiers Valley can rewrite history with a win in Week 6:

(PROGRAMMING UPDATE: On this week's high school football broadcast, MSA Sports' Matt Vandriak will fill in for Lanny Frattare, normally heard at that time. MSA Sports' Bob Orkwis, as usual, will provide color commentary.)
