Mother Facing Charges After Child Is Found Wandering On North Side

PITTSBUGH (KDKA) -- A local mother is facing charges after her 2-year-old was found wandering around Pittsburgh's North Side neighborhood Thursday evening.

Someone found the boy along Brighton Road and his mother is now facing child endangerment charges.

According to police, the child was left home alone while his mother went shopping.

Police say 20-year-old Jewels Berlin was arrested and charged after the toddler was found wandering in nothing but a dirty diaper and a robe.

Police say a Good Samaritan spotted the child just after 8 p.m. and reported it to Zone 1, which is also on Brighton Road, a short distance from where the child was seen.

The child was brought to the police station, but was later taken to Children's Hospital to be checked over.

Just about an hour later, police got a phone call from Berlin who was reporting her child missing. Police say she put the child to bed and left to go shopping.

"The most disturbing part is that the child is unattended and the physical condition of the child at the time that they were recovered," said Commander RaShall Brackney, of the Pittsburgh Police. "We're extremely grateful that someone saw the child and was moved enough to come to the police station."

Berlin was charged with endangering the welfare of a child. The child is said to be in good condition but is now in the custody of Children and Youth Services.
